Intercultural Understanding (IU) is one of the
three core strands in the Key Stage 2
Framework, reflecting the inextricable links between language
learning and cultural awareness.
Through exploring other cultures and
communities, children develop a greater understanding of their own
lives. By challenging assumptions of what is ‘normal’, children
become more aware of the similarities and differences between
peoples, their daily lives, beliefs and values.
Many teachers will find that they are already
addressing, or are able to address, the objectives of the IU strand
in other areas of the primary curriculum, such as PSHCE, Geography
etc.
Questions
- What good examples have you seen of IU being developed,
either in language lessons or in other areas of the
curriculum?
- Which festivals from
other cultures might you choose to share with your
children?
- While many aspects of IU
can be taught in English, it is important to include an element of
new language learning. How can this be done effectively?
Activity
Choose a year group and look carefully at the IU learning
objectives and opportunities on pages 75-77 of the Key Stage 2
Framework.
Choose an objective which links well to Oracy or Literacy or
both and plan an activity showing how the strands interrelate. Make
a note of the new language to be taught.
