One of the many benefits of teaching languages at primary school is the chance it gives us to use the new language both in discrete lessons and across the curriculum, as well as throughout the school day.

IMAGE1In this way, the new language is given status, not only as a curriculum subject, but as a means of communicating with others.

Children (and staff) are thereby given a valuable opportunity to practise language in different contexts and reinforce their understanding and skills.

Teachers with any level of experience of teaching primary languages can make links to other subjects, beginning where they feel comfortable (e.g. with a short mental maths game conducted in the new language) and building on this to plan further opportunities.
