5 year strategy for children and learning
(DfES, July 2004)

A document outlining government plans for children and learning over a five year period. With reference to primary, the strategy aims to ensure ‘every primary school offers high standards in the basics but in the context of a broad, rich and enjoyable curriculum’ (DfES, 2004: 4).

This includes the offer of a wider primary curriculum in which ‘every child has the choice to learn and foreign language’ (DfES, 2004: 8).

A report on progress made in achieving in the aims of the 5 year strategy since 2004 with a view towards 2008 and beyond. This includes the percentage of primary schools already delivering or planning to deliver primary languages at the time, estimated to be around 56%.
