New resource helps map pupils' progress
Asset Languages have launched new materials to help teachers map their pupils' progress in languages against the Languages Ladder. A taster pack of materials has been sent to every primary school in the country and can also be downloaded from the Asset Languages website.

Linking literacy and languages: new guidance published
The DCSF have published comprehensive new guidance for advisers on making links between primary languages and literacy.

Book now for primary CPD courses
CILT is running nine one-day primary languages courses in London and Manchester this year. These lively, practical courses cover themes including getting started, subject coordination and progression.

Support for subject coordinators arriving in school soon
Keep an eye out for a CILT resources pack that will be sent to all primary schools in England in early September. The pack is aimed at subject coordinators and marks the beginning of primary languages Entitlement 2009/10.

Children growing sunflowersSpotlight on... cross curricular links

Making meaningful links with other subjects in the curriculum provides opportunities to reinforce and extend learning, both in the new language and in the other subject.

It is vital that children are given ample chance to use the new language during the week if they are to make good progress. Bringing the new language into elements of other lessons is an effective way of making use of time available in the curriculum, without compromising learning in any subject.

If you are confident with making cross curricular links, how about going one step further and looking at Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)?

CLIL is when another subject in the curriculum is taught through the medium of the new language.
