Becoming a teacher

If you want to be a teacher in England and Wales you will need complete a programme of Initial Teacher Training (ITT) in order to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). There are many different types of ITT and the option you choose depends upon your qualifications, experience, circumstances and preferences.

When choosing your programme, you need to consider the following:

  • Which age group do you want to teach, primary or secondary?
  • Which subject(s) do you want to teach? (Primary teachers are expected to teach all subjects across the curriculum.)
  • Do you have a degree? (There are both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.)
  • Do you want to go a university-based or employment-based programme?
  • Do want to do the course on a full-time or part-time basis?
  • Are you eligible for a training bursary or any other type of funding?
