Swindon - Transition project 2008-09
Both schools participating in the project have expressed a
desire to see the language learning from Key Stage 2 acknowledged
and celebrated before moving onto learning Spanish in Year 7. They
want to recognise the skills children have developed in their first
foreign language. These skills can be transferred to learning their
second language.
Sharing cross phase pedagogy. Schools wanted to develop a project
which would allow them to work together collaboratively, to
learn from each other and also to reflect on their own
practice. Due to the huge shift in language teaching in the last
few years, this has impacted enormously on both Primary and
Secondary practice. It also focused on developing an increased
understanding of the things that children were doing in the primary
school and their skills base.
Impact
This project has had a big impact
on the involvement of KS3 students in extracurricular
activities. Whilst numbers of Year 7 currently involved are
slight, it is anticipated that this will increase as those involved
in the project at primary take charge of ensuring its survival and
development as they become the new KS3 contributors.
It has also raised the profile of Languages in the wider community
– there is a buzz about languages and children are enthused
and motivated. Read more (doc,
