Since July 2009, CILT has been working on a cross-phase project
to look at transitions within and across languages education from
Year 7 through key stages 3 and 4 to post-16 and HE. A strong
focus on intercultural understanding, what this is
and how it informs and impacts on teaching and learning, has been
pivotal to this project.
The project has involved 10 Local Authorities
working with languages advisers and teachers and involving HE
partners. Use the left-hand menu to explore each of these
projects and to download examples of the work they have
produced.
Aims
Our aims are that the impact of this work will
encourage:
- A coherent approach to planning and teaching across Key Stages
3, 4 and post-16.
- Transparency in linguistic progression for teachers and
learners.
- Teachers and learners to engage with complex language and
concepts that embed language learning as a life-long skill for
living and working at home and abroad.
- An increase in motivated, more autonomous language learners who
are confident in how to learn languages and who recognise
the benefits of their knowledge of languages and cultures in
preparing for the adult world.
- Greater number of students taking languages post-16 and
continuing into post-19 courses.
