Gateways to the Professions Report (Department for Education
and Skills (DfES), July 2005)
Sir Alan Langlands’ study
investigated opportunities to lift barriers for individuals to
enter the professions. The Chartered Institute of Linguists
was invited to participate in the initial forum to represent the
interests of the Languages Professions.
Recommendations in the
report included:
- Better information, advice and guidance with involvement from
the professions
- More flexible entry and study routes in HE for mature
students
- Better monitoring of demand from and supply into the
professions
- Improved recruitment and retention measures
- Closer working between employers and HE
- A series of more flexible financial mechanisms to improve
access to HE and the Professions
The report and the government initiative which followed led
directly to CILT’s Gateways into Languages work - for more
information and resources, visit the Higher education
section of this website.
The report also indirectly
led to the creation of the National Network
for Translation and the National
Network for Interpreting, which form part of the Routes into Languages
programme.
