Teachers and language professionals at this year’s
Language World conference (26 & 27 March) will be the first in
line to see the latest MYLO materials, and will have the
opportunity to discuss the project with some of the people behind
its development. MYLO - a new online language learning resource –
is currently being introduced to pilot schools across the country
and will soon be available for free to every school in England.
MYLO has been developed in response to Lord
Dearing’s recommendation in 2007 to create an Open School for
Languages, which would recognise the growing importance of
technology in language learning. It enables students aged fourteen
to sixteen to learn French, German, Spanish and Mandarin through a
wide range of challenges and activities, which include producing
a computer game, working for a celebrity chef and marketing a
theme park.
Kathryn Board, Chief Executive of CILT, the
National Centre for Languages, said: ‘We are really pleased to be
able to introduce MYLO at an event as prestigious as Language World
– in particular in its 20th anniversary year. As a
government funded initiative, we are keen to get as much feedback
as possible on MYLO from language professionals and teachers, to
ensure that people feel happy and confident using it in their
schools, so we hope people will come along and share their
thoughts.’
Linda Parker, Director of the Association for
Language Learning (ALL), said: ‘ALL is delighted that this exciting
new initiative is being showcased at Language World this
year. I’m sure that our delegates will be keen to find out
more about MYLO and how it will help motivate and support young
language learners, especially in secondary schools.’
MYLO will be exhibiting on both Friday and
Saturday at Language World, and there will also be a seminar at
2.50pm on Friday delivered by MYLO consultant Wendy Adeniji. To
