Professor Paul Seedhouse and the research team at Newcastle
University in association with the National Centre for Languages
and the Institut français would like to invite you to a
dissemination event for the French Digital Kitchen project on
Monday 24th October at the Institut français, 17
Queensberry Place, South Kensington, London, SW7 2DT.
The French Digital Kitchen is a purpose built
kitchen developed by Newcastle University for French language
learning which speaks to users in French and gives them
step-by-step instructions on how to prepare French cuisine and
teaches aspects of French language.
Embedded or ‘hidden’ digital sensors have been
developed and inserted in or attached to all the equipment and
ingredients allowing the kitchen to detect and evaluate activity as
users progress through their cooking tasks.
As the kitchen is able to detect what users
are doing, it can provide feedback such as a reminder or more
details about a certain cooking action. This feedback is available
in both French and English. Users are also able to communicate with
the kitchen, using an interactive screen where they can request
audio and textual help along the way.
The event will showcase the
French Digital Kitchen and the programme will include:
- A talk by Professor Graham Davies on Computer
Assisted Language Learning
- A talk by Professor Paul Seedhouse on the
French Digital Kitchen Project
- Demonstrations of a portable French Digital
Kitchen
- Hands-on sessions with a portable French
Digital Kitchen
The programme of activities will run
twice. A morning session is from 11am to 1pm and an afternoon
session from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.
A free French lunchtime buffet will be served
in Le Bistro from 1pm -2pm, please let us know if you would like to
join us for this when you register.

afternoon programme by email to Dr Anne Preston at anne.preston@ncl.ac.uk
